Medical care in the U.S. is not state-subsidized and can be very costly.
(An initial visit to a physician may cost $200, plus charges for
laboratory fees and prescription medicines.)
We therefore
urge all participants to obtain health insurance prior to departing
their country. If your participation is being
sponsored by an international funding agency, you should check with that
institution regarding insurance coverage.
The medical facility we recommend for any emergency treatment you
may require is George Washington University Hospital, located at 901 23rd Street, N.W.
Immediate emergency assistance (ambulance, fire, police) may be obtained by dialing 911 on
the nearest telephone. The ILI will assist you in making an appointment with a physician
or dentist for routine medical needs.
