Long Distance Telephone Service |
|
Complete information regarding long distance service may be found in the white pages of the telephone directory. The information below is a summary of that section. Please be aware that telephone calls made from hotels are often quite expensive. We suggest that you make as few calls as possible from the hotel, placing them instead from the International Law Institute. You may make calls from the front desk of the ILI Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm. Whereas hotels add a surcharge of up to 100% to most international calls as their profit, the ILI charges participants only what the phone company charges us. On the first day of your seminar, your Program Administrator will provide more information about making calls from the ILI. Direct Dial Calls You may place a direct ("station to station") call from most telephones to any location in the U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii) and the Caribbean. Dial direct calls are less expensive than operator assisted calls, for both domestic and international service. (These lower rates also apply to calls placed through the Operator from a phone where dial direct service is not available.) Dial direct rates for calls within the U.S. are based on the distance of the call and the length of the time that you talk. There is an initial charge for the first minute at any time of day or night. Each minute thereafter is charged at a slightly lower rate; this is subject to discounts at certain times of the day:
Placing Direct Dial Calls Domestic (U.S. and Caribbean): Dial a 1, then the 3 digit area code for the location you are calling, followed by the 7 digit local number. The map in the front of most telephone books shows the area code for the U.S. and the Caribbean; it also shows time zones for the U.S. Local numbers can be found in the phone book or by dialing directory assistance at 411. Long-distance numbers can be found by dialing 1, then the area code, followed by 555-1212. You may request up to two numbers with each call. Please note there is a charge of $.50 each time you call directory assistance. International Calls International calls may be dialed directly from many phones. To place a direct international call, dial 011, the country code, city code and local number. If you do not know the country code, you may dial "0" and request this information from the Operator. International rates are also based on distance and duration of the call, with lower rates at certain times of the day. For information regarding rates and discount periods for the country you wish to call, dial the Operator ("0"). Operator Assisted Call To place an operator assisted domestic call, dial "0", then the area code and the local number; for an international call, simply dial "0". There will be a surcharge for the first three minutes of these calls in addition to the dial direct rates, for both domestic and international calls. After the first three minutes, the remainder of the call is billed at the dial direct rate in effect at that time of day. |
