Shopping

The following list has been developed to assist you in choosing where to shop for various types of goods in the Washington area. Address, nearest Metro station and business hours are given for each store described below. Please note that prices in these stores are fixed. It is generally not considered proper to bargain, except in the case of large items such as automobiles.

Georgetown

Georgetown has many shops and boutiques along 'M' Street and Wisconsin Avenue. Although they are relatively more expensive than other areas, reasonable prices can be found at some shops, and "window shopping" is very popular in this area.

Downtown

The downtown shopping area is located principally around the "Metro Center" subway station, defined by 'F' and 'G' Streets, NW, between 12th and 14th Streets. Here you will find a major department store as well as many stores specializing in men's and women's clothing, shoes, travel goods, etc.

Connecticut Avenue

Connecticut Avenue, between "Farragut North" and "Dupont Circle" metro stations, is a good (though somewhat more expensive) shopping area. There are also many specialty shops along 'K' Street, 18th Street, and 19th Street in this area.

DC Shopping Malls

The Shops at Georgetown Park, 3222 M Street, NW. This upscale shopping mall has a variety of shops and restaraunts, and is open from 10 am to 9 pm. Tel: 298-5577.

"The Shops" 529 14th St., NW. This downtown mall, a recent addition to the Washington area, features over 100 stores and restaurants in a three-level shopping complex. Please call 783-9090 for further information.

Suburban Shopping Malls

Following is a list of many shopping malls located in Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area. These are large, enclosed shopping complexes consisting of major department stores, specialty stores, drugstores, restaurants and often movie theaters. They are open seven days a week, generally from 10 am to 9 pm, Monday through Saturday, and 12 noon to 6 pm on Sunday. The ILI staff can provide information on transportation to these malls. Please note that there usually is a planned excursion to the Potomac Mills Outlet Mall. This mall is less expensive than most malls and true bargains can be found.

Department Stores

Shopping in department stores is convenient because a wide variety of goods are available at one location. There are separate departments for men's, women's and children's clothing, jewelry, household goods, gifts, books, food, etc. Many of these stores have a "budget" department located in the basement, where prices are lower. Hecht's is the only department store located downtown, at 12th and 'G' Streets, NW Hours are 10 am- 9 pm, Monday through Saturday, and 12 noon to 5 pm on Sunday. Other department stores are located within the shopping malls previously mentioned.

Filene's Basement, the oldest off-price store in the US selling higher-end designer fashions with several locations in Washington: 1133 Connecticut Ave., NW, tel: 872-8430; 5300 Wisconsin Ave, NW, tel: 966-0208; and 529 14th St., tel: 638-4110.

Jerusalem Butcher Shop, 2116 18th Street NW, Adams Morgan, 265-7100. The food they serve is halal. Nearest Metro: Dupont Circle.
