AROUND TOWN

Metrorail

Washington's subway transportation system, called the "Metro", provides a rapid and comfortable means of local transportation. It costs $1.20 to ride the metro within the District, although it is slightly more during rush hours. Fare cards must be purchased from machines located at the metro stations which accept change and $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills. Station Attendants are located at every station at a booth near the entrance and exit gates. The attendants will assist you if you have any questions about the metro. For detailed route and fare information please consult the Metro brochure included in your information kit, visit The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority website: www.wmata.com), or call 637-7000, which is the metro information number.

Operating Hours are as follows:

5:30 am - 12:00 Midnight, Monday through Thursday

5:30 am - 3:00 am, Friday

7:00 am - 3.00 am, Saturday

Metrobus

The bus system serves a much larger geographic area than the subway. It also provides an alternative means of transportation to the subway for those who prefer to travel above ground and to view the city while they ride. Timetables for bus routes are available at the attendant's booth at every Metro station. Most run between 6:00 am and 11:00 pm. Bus stops are indicated by red, white, and blue signs. Bus route numbers are indicated on the front of the bus, above the window.

Fares within the city limits of Washington are $1.10 one-way. Please note that this fare is susceptible to change during rush hour depending on the bus you take. You will need exact change to ride the bus.

If you wish to ride the metro and then transfer to the bus, pick a transfer ticket at a metro station before you enter the platform. After you exit the metro, use the transfer ticket at the bus stop closest to metro station, and the ride will cost you 25 cents only. If you wish to transfer from one bus route to another, ask the driver for a transfer slip, and show it to the driver of the bus you transfer to - your ride will be free of charge.  There are no transfers issued from the bus system to the subway.

The Metrobus information services will tell you how to get from place to place by bus. Please call 637-7000 for help in planning your route.

Taxis

Taxis in Washington do not have meters showing what the fare will be. Instead, fares are based on a zone system. A zone map must be displayed in every taxi licensed in the District of Columbia, (taxis in Maryland and Virginia, however, do use meters). When traveling within a single zone (approximately one mile in radius), the fare is $5.50 for one person if you hail a cab off the street. The fare increases by approximately $1.50 for each new zone entered. There is a flat charge of $1.50 for each additional person in the same group going to the same destination, regardless of the distance traveled. There is an additional charge for travel during rush hours (07:00-09:30 and 16:00-18:30). Tips of around 10% of the fare are expected. Contact one of the following companies to request a cab: Capitol Cab, 546-2400 and Yellow Cab, 544-1212. Please remember that phoning for a taxi puts an additional US$2 on the fare.
