The Corporate Challenge

The most daunting challenges facing corporations in the new millennium will involve matters pertaining to global, economic and public policy. Any company holding itself out as a good corporate citizen must manifest responsible policies on a broad range of societal issues—from the ethnic and gender make-up of its board of directors to respect for human rights in developing nations — from environmental care and integrity to fair labor standards — and from ethical business practices to investing in communities where the company owes a special duty either by virtue of its presence or by virtue of its profits.

Societal issues have become increasingly more relevant to both the public profile and balance sheet of virtually every corporation, whether large or small, local or global.

Leading studies show that companies are taking corporate policy matters much more seriously, particularly as the threat of litigation, well organized boycotts and shareholder reprisal become more prevalent and costly. Those companies with good records on corporate policy issues have been rewarded in the marketplace with discernible benefits, including enhanced reputations and goodwill, competitive advantages, and stronger bottom lines.

As corporate leaders face today’s unique challenges, the Corporate Policy Institute seeks to play a supporting role by providing timely research, education and leadership forums on critical policy issues affecting the corporate sector. In so doing, the Institute also will serve as a resource center for policymakers, the media, and the public to provide reasoned, authoritative and comprehensive information on corporate policy.
