Bautista ILI Alumna Lilia Bautista Named to WTO Appellate Body

Ms. Bautista was born in the Philippines and has served her country in numerous roles, including serving as the Philippine Permanent Representative in Geneva to the United Nations, WTO, and several other international organizations. During her tenure in Geneva, she chaired several committees.

ILI Chairman Don Wallace, on hearing the news of Bautista’s election, recalled her association with the Institute and her remarkable career: “Lilia Bautista of the Philippines is a long time friend of the Institute; she is an alumna of our first training course, the two month investment negotiation course we gave in 1973-74, and is a member of the advisory board of our International Trade Law Center. Lilia has had a distinguished career; not only is she currently on the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization, previously she was Undersecretary of the Ministry of Industry and Trade in Manila, ambassador of the Philippines to the WTO in Geneva, and chair of the Philippines Securities and Exchange Commission, among other positions.”

Ms. Bautista credited ILI with helping her career. “ILI has been a great help to government officials of developing countries. The investment negotiation course I took helped me in my job not only as Governor of the Philippine Board of Investments but also in the various positions I held in the public and private sectors.”
