At the International Law Institute, we believe that lasting institutional change begins with people. Laws, policies, and systems matter—but it is capable, connected, and confident professionals who turn ideas into action. That belief has guided ILI for more than half a century, and it continues to shape every program we deliver.

Today’s professionals have access to more information than ever before. Knowledge can be found online in seconds. But information alone does not build judgment. It does not inspire leadership. And it does not create the trusted relationships that make international cooperation possible.

That is why ILI continues to invest in the power of in-person learning.

While we embrace technology and offer hybrid programming where appropriate, we believe the most transformative learning happens when accomplished professionals from around the world come together to exchange ideas, challenge assumptions, and learn from one another. Research consistently shows that participants retain more when learning is active, collaborative, and grounded in real-world experience. More importantly, the conversations that happen between sessions, over meals, during site visits, and long after class has ended often become the most valuable part of the experience.

Our classrooms are intentionally designed so that every participant is heard, respected, and challenged. The diversity of experience represented around the table is one of ILI’s greatest assets. Participants learn not only from distinguished faculty, but also from judges, legislators, regulators, bankers, lawyers, development professionals, and public officials facing many of the same challenges in different parts of the world. Those relationships frequently become lasting professional partnerships and lifelong friendships.

ILI faculty are not simply experts in their fields—they are helping to shape them. Our instructors include leaders who draft legislation, negotiate international agreements, establish industry standards, advise governments, direct multilateral initiatives, and lead major institutions. Participants learn directly from the people influencing today’s global conversations on law, finance, governance, trade, and development.

Washington, DC serves as an extension of the classroom. Located at the crossroads of international policymaking, ILI gives participants opportunities to engage directly with lawmakers, regulators, multilateral organizations, financial institutions, and industry leaders. Visits to government agencies, international organizations, courts, and historic institutions connect classroom discussions with the realities of policymaking and implementation.

But the ILI experience does not end when participants return home.

Many alumni return for advanced programs, recommend ILI to colleagues, or partner with us on technical assistance initiatives. Organizations that first engage us for training often seek our support as they implement reforms. Likewise, institutions that begin with technical assistance frequently return for executive education to strengthen leadership and build long-term capacity. These relationships reflect what matters most to us: not a single course, but enduring partnerships that create lasting impact.

Our alumni community spans more than 190 countries and countless institutions. We celebrate their successes, remain available as a resource throughout their careers, and continue to connect professionals across borders who share a commitment to stronger institutions, effective governance, and the rule of law.
