Retired US Ambassador John J. Maresca is excited to announce the release of his new book Ukraine: Putin’s War for Russia’s “Near Abroad” published by Ibidem. Co-authored with Ida Manton, Maresca’s book explores how the war over Ukraine reflects Putin’s broader effort to re-establish Moscow’s control over the whole of what was the USSR and why that is unacceptable for the United States.
Drawing on his unique experience as the leading United States negotiator during the Helsinki series of talks and as a special Ambassadorial envoy to the newly Independent States from the former USSR, Ambassador Maresca reflects on his pivotal role in US-USSR negotiations that helped close the Cold War. Mr. Maresca will also discuss his special mission to Ukraine and other then newly independent former Soviet states, where, in his capacity as a senior NATO official, he welcomed their independence and expressed direct US support. The book recounts his special mission in the region at that time and provides his perspective on current regional events.
In today’s increasingly relevant geopolitical context, Maresca’s book, available in bookstores and online, highlights why continued US support for Ukraine is critical in countering Putin’s efforts to reassert control over Russia’s “Near Abroad.”
