The International Law Institute will hire an Executive Director in 2022

The International Law Institute (ILI) is a leading provider of training and technical assistance for developing and transitional economies. Within ILI’s mission of promoting the rule of law, our focus has been on the areas of law most relevant for successful economic development, including procurement, court administration, legislative drafting, infrastructure finance and regulation, public private partnerships and financial management. Founded in 1955 at Georgetown University Law Center and still headquartered in Washington, DC, ILI has since 1983 been a non-political, non-profit educational institute serving a global constituency while remaining independent of any government. Tens of thousands of lawyers, government officials, and others, from 186 countries, have been trained by ILI and its global affiliates. ILI also provides technical expertise to developing nations in the drafting and implementation of laws and regulation, and the development of economic and government policies, to promote good and efficient governance and development through the rule of law. www.ili.org

ILI is currently managed by an acting executive director. We seek an experienced leader and business developer with expertise in international development law issues to fill the role on a permanent basis. This individual will be expected to promote significant growth and make ILI a more visible and influential institution. We want someone to lead ILI into its next generation of success.

JOB DESCRIPTION

In collaboration with ILI Board of Directors, develop institutional strategy and goals, and ensure successful pursuit of established strategy and goals.

Direct and develop ILI staff and faculty.

Ensure that ILI training programs are up to date, responsive to the needs of our clients, and delivered with a high degree of professionalism.

Serve as ILI’s primary representative to our many constituencies, including foreign governments, development agencies, law firms, corporations, and others.

Oversee marketing and development efforts, including by aggressively seeking business opportunities with development agencies (such as USAID, the World Bank, and the various regional development banks), client country governments, and other groups.

Pursue significant growth for ILI, including the possible development of new lines of activity aimed at promotion of the rule of law.

Coordinate with ILI affiliates abroad and ensure productive and collaborative relationships between organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

  • Significant and progressively increasing leadership experience (minimum 10-15 years) within institutions involved with international law or development (e.g., NGOs, government agencies, multilateral organizations, consulting firms, law firms, etc.).
  • Excellent English language written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong public speaking skills and experience and the ability to create and deliver presentations before high-profile audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work under pressure in a team-based environment.
  • Law degree (strongly preferred) or other relevant post-graduate qualifications.
  • Ability to develop and articulate a vision and strategy for ILI’s future growth.

In addition, the ideal candidate would have the following qualifications:

  • Experience in development and management of programs related to the rule of law for developing countries.
  • Exhibited thought leadership via publication, teaching, or significant involvement with relevant professional organizations.
  • Success in developing and winning proposals with bilateral and/or multilateral development agencies and/or other funders.
  • Experience with training in the context of international development.
