ILI Furthers Relations with Key India Law and Civil Service Institutions

The International Law Institute has a decades long and trusted relationship with the government and people of India and has hosted an excess of 220 government officials and legal practitioners for capacity building programs. Additionally, the ILI has co-hosted several international conferences with Indian counterparts. The ILI led by Robert Sargin, Director, and Manuj Bhardwaj, Senior Advisor to ILI on India, recently conducted meetings with key government, civil service, law, policy, and media institutions in India. These meetings focused on advancing institutional awareness, technical assistance and capacity building, and international resources available to support domestic and international obligations and opportunities.

ILI is proud of our new relations in India at this important time in the advancement of India’s economic, legal, social, and geopolitical initiatives.

Supreme Court of India

The International Law Institute was graciously invited to the Supreme Court of India by Hon’ble Chief Justice of India Dr. D.Y. Chandrachud to view proceedings. Discussions focused on ILI’s International Judicial Academy and our specialized training of judges and court administrators from India and globally.

Hosted by Shri Abhishek Singh, President and Chief Executive Officer of the National e-Government Division, Digital India Corporation; and CEO of the National Programme for Civil Service Capacity Building NPCSCB.  Robert Sargin discussed ILI’s 67-year history of providing highly technical and customized training to civil servants globally and how ILI might be best able to support the expanding capacity initiatives of the government of India.

After being generously invited by Director Srinvas R. Katikithala, candid discussions were held concerning ILI’s expertise in developing and delivering highly specialized training for government officials and civil servants. ILI expressed its global reach, capabilities, and ability to bring international best practices to support LBSNAA’s initiatives. LBSNAA serves as a primary civil service training institute on public policy and public administration in India, It focuses on training IAS level civil servants

and conducting the foundation course for Group A Central Civil Services. 

Professor Dr. G.K. Goswami [IPS]

Dr. G. K. Goswami currently serves as the Additional Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh. Previously, he was the Head of the Anti-Terrorist Squad of UP, served as the Joint Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation in New Delhi, directed the CBI academy in Ghaziabad, and was an expert on organized crime in the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC). Dr. Goswami and the ILI are working towards a visiting scholar program to take place at ILI in Washington, DC in 2023, focused on areas of criminal law, forensics, trafficking, crimes against persons, and defense of the accused, to support of India’s domestic policy development.

ILI is fortunate to have worked with Sanjay Notani, Partner and Co-Head of the International Trade and Customs Practice at ELP, across several international conferences. These conferences focused on international trade, developments with the WTO, and international investment. Mr. Notani’s expertise and insights on India policy and perspectives provided an important framework for our global participating constituency. We will continue to work together on engagements.

Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs

Like the International Law Institute, the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs trains government officials and or civil servants across a spectrum of technical issues. The IICA is a central civil service training institute for the central civil servants of the Indian Corporate Law Service. It is the sole institution in the country that has been authorized by the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India to run its flagship Graduate Insolvency Program. It also houses the training academy of top cadre of Indian Corporate Law Service. IICA works and operates to deliver as well as create avenues and opportunities for research, education, training, and advocacy. ILI was honored to meet with Director and CEO, Praveen Kumar to discuss future collaborations.

Indian Society of International Law (ISIL)

In a meeting with esteemed members of the Indian Society of International Law including Shri Pravin Parekh – President of ISIL, Maj. General Shri Nilendra Kumar – Executive President, Shikhar Ranjan – Secretary General, the ILI and ISIL discussed critical issues of capacity building throughout the legal community, expanding opportunities for increased international investment into India, and enhancing the legal services of India. ILI and ISIL will work towards establishing future exchanges, co-joined programs, and exchanges of personnel for the benefit of the Indian and international legal communities.

While on site, ILI and ISIL held a joint conference focused on globalization, regionalization, and the role of the Indian legal community, which was attended by leading experts, academics, and practitioners in New Delhi.

Indian Law Institute (ILI)

The Indian Law Institute [ILI] was established in 1956 as an International Centre for advanced socio-legal research, education, and training. Its prime objective is to cultivate and promote the science of law and to contribute to reforming the administration of justice to meet the socio-economic aspirations and needs of the people. The institute is a premier center for national & international legal research and studies, in which the lawyers, judges, government officials and academics participate.

The two ILIs met as part of an International Law Institute and Indian Society of International Law conference. While our time was short, we will continue discussions to identify points of collaboration in legal training moving forward to benefit the Indian and International law communities.

The Economic Times is an English-language, business-focused daily newspaper based in India. It is owned by The Times Group, and as of 2012, it was the world’s second-most widely read English-language business newspaper, after The Wall Street Journal. The ILI’s Robert Sargin and Preveen Singh of ET Legal World committed to work together to develop and deliver content and conferences in the fields of law, investment/trade, and governance, with joint programs commencing in 2023.

Global Policy Insights [GPI] and Accords International [Acln]

Global Policy Insights is a centrist policy institute with a vision to equip governments, policy makers, NGOs, and diverse actors within the sphere of international development with the tools required to nurture good governance practices and promote sustainable development. Accords International is a premiere organization working in the area of conflict resolution through innovative techniques in mediation and restorative justice. Led by Arpit Chaturvedi, Founder & CEO, Accords International’s goal is to create a wider network of conflict resolution professionals, mediators, and restorative justice facilitators to provide better solutions for solving disputes without going to court.  It is the intention of ILI and AcIn to develop substantive alliances in our common area of expertise in conflict resolution.
